Fleet Movement Explorations

Sunday, February 14th, 2016 3:00 pm
Drop-in dance workshop, by donation
Fleet Movement Explorations is an experimental dance class in which we explore, among other things, developmental movement patterns while sensing ourselves in space, weight, time, and the three dimensions. This is extended to explore the articulation of movement initiations and refinement of body alignments. We play with evoking movement though qualities of feeling, shape, force, idea, word and more. From this basis, we work out interactive improvisational skits. The class is basically informal, challenging, and fun, and a good movement workout. It plays spontaneously with forces, shapes, images, and ideas rather than specific dance technique. At times we will have guest teachers. All are welcome. Lead by Becky Burrill—dancer-choreographer, developmental-creative arts educator, writer, visual artist.

This season's theme: TABLE MANNERS: Recipes for Polite Society Explore the confines of class and the balance of personal freedoms in the midst of tight family and social structures, often served before the entrée at dinner. A rich and disturbing story set in China in the 1920s that follows the four wives of a wealthy merchant, each of whom tries to claim personal agency, sexual attention, and love despite their deeply misogynist and oppressive culture. As Ellen J. Fried points out in her essay in Reel Food (Routledge, 2004), it's the customs and rituals related to food that prove the women's greatest source of social control and manipulation within their domestic situation, from the quality of the meals they prepare to the dining rules they set. Such power, however, comes at a price...

Outermost Contra Dance

Friday, February 19th, 2016 7:30 pm
$10 suggested donation
Come dance! The Outermost Contra dance happens on the third Friday of each month, and in different locations on the Outer Cape. There is a community potluck beforehand at 6:30, with the dance starting at 7:30. Guest musicians TBA. What is contradance? Contra dancing is the old time dance of New England, danced to the exuberant reels and jigs from the traditional repertoires of the British Isles, Canada and America. Contra dancing is social interaction set to music, meeting people, and making new friends. A caller, working with a group of live musicians, guides new and experienced dancers alike through a variety of dances. No need to bring a partner, but bring friends and family! All dances are taught, and if you can walk you can dance! Or you can just come to listen. People of all ages and lifestyles, including children, are welcome. Contra dances are a place where people from many walks of life come together to dance and socialize. Our dance is supported by a small grant from the Country Dance and Song Society and by donations. The suggested donation is $10 or whatever you can afford to put towards supporting the dances.
