Fleet Movement Explorations

Sunday, August 24th, 2014 3:00 pm
Drop in dance workshop, by donation
Fleet Movement Explorations is an experimental dance class in which we explore, among other things, developmental movement patterns while sensing ourselves in space, weight, time, and the three dimensions. This is extended to exploring the articulation of movement initiations and refinement of body alignments. We play with evoking movement though qualities of feeling, shape, force, idea, word and more. From this basis, we work out interactive improvisational skits. The class is basically informal, challenging, and fun, and a good movement workout. It plays spontaneously with forces, shapes, images, and ideas rather than specific dance technique. At times we will have guest teachers. All are welcome. Lead by Becky Burrill—dancer-choreographer, developmental-creative arts educator, writer, visual artist.

Bright New Stars Series: Tall Heights

Thursday, August 28th, 2014 7:30 pm
$12.00
BUY TICKETS HERE In the summer of 2010, Tim Harrington and Paul Wright were playing for spare change in Boston’s Faneuil Hall Marketplace. In three fast years, Tall Heights has put on hundreds of shows, headlining packed listening rooms across the country, touring down to Austin, TX to showcase at South By Southwest Music Festival, and sharing stages with national acts like David Wilcox, Ryan Montbleau, Andrew Belle, Lori McKenna, and many more. For the duo’s debut full-length effort, Man of Stone (May, 2013), Tall Heights hit the home studio, sinking deeper into the vast world they’ve meticulously built for two. The title track and first single, Man of Stone, recalls a time when cavemen documented day-to-day existence on the walls of their stone-sheltered dwellings. “Emblems of cavemen they taught me / the importance of typing in bold,” contextualizes the rest of the record and challenges a careful listener to view each song as a vital documentation of what is both banal and extraordinary. The record exists in a fire-lit, shadowy space for their growing army of fans to inhabit. After two powerful EPs, there has been a growing cry for more from these young artists, and Tall Heights delivers with an LP of grand vision and scale. Local Lens Series: Northern Borders

Friday, August 29th, 2014 7:30 pm
$10.00
BUY TICKETS HERE WATCH TRAILER HERE Award-winning director Jay Craven will present his most recent New England film, “Northern Borders,” at 7:30pm, Friday, August 29th as part of the Hall's Local Lens Series. The screening will include an introduction and post-film discussion led by director Craven. “Northern Borders” stars Bruce Dern (“Nebraska”) and Geneviève Bujold (“Anne of a Thousand Days,” “King of Hearts”). Both Bujold and Dern have received Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Emmy nominations. Bujold has also won an Emmy and Golden Globe. Northern Borders also stars Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick (“Moonrise Kingdom” and “Before Midnight”) and 2010 Tony Award nominee Jessica Hecht (“Sideways,” “Friends”).   Others in the supporting cast include John Shea, Jay O. Sanders, Mark Margolis, Tom Bodett, Rusty Dewees, and John Rothman. Northern Borders was shot in Vermont and New Hampshire, and it’s based on the award-winning Howard Frank Mosher novel that was recently declared by The London Guardian as one of the “Top Ten Books Featuring Grandparents.” It tells the story of ten year-old Austen Kittredge, who is sent to live on his grandparents’ Kingdom County Vermont farm, where he has wild adventures and uncovers long-festering family secrets. It’s 1956 and Austen experiences rural Kingdom County as a place full of eccentric people including his stubborn grandparents, whose thorny marriage is known as the Forty Years War. Initially feeling stuck in this fractured household, young Austen plans a quick exit but ends up stranded with no choice but to navigate and endure. A humorous and sometimes startling coming-of-age story, Northern Borders evokes Vermont’s wildness, its sublime beauty, a haunted past, and an aura of enchantment. Craven, whose family has strong ties to Wellfleet and has been coming here for decade, has made six feature films including “Disappearances” (2007 with Kris Kristofferson) and “Where the Rivers Flow North” (1994 with Rip Torn and Tantoo Cardinal). His films have played 73 festivals, including Sundance—with special screenings at The Smithsonian and Lincoln Center. Craven’s commitment to New England place-based filmmaking was recently profiled by Orion Magazine that wrote: “Jay Craven has come closer than any other filmmaker to realizing (American poet, essayist, and film theorist) Vachel Lindsay’s dream of a vital regional cinema that embodies the character and genius of a place in all its mystery, magnificence, and pain.” Don't miss this extra special screening event!  LEARN  MORE ABOUT THE FILM HERE READ A REVIEW OF THE FILM HERE
