Capoeira Class - all ages

Thursday, August 25th, 2016 8:30 am
Taught by Andre Lima, this Brazilian fusion of dance and martial arts engages on many levels. Andre's techniques employ aspects of culture and music along with fitness and strength building. All ages are welcome - this is a great family activity! Developed as a form of self-defense by the slaves in Brazil during the 17th century, capoeira is an art which combines self-defense, dance, and music. Through the practice of capoeira, students increase their flexibility, coordination, strength, balance, and self-confidence. Capoeira is very different from other martial arts in that it involves not only self-defense, but movement, music, dance and much more. To learn capoeira, one must not only learn the basic movements, but understand the roots of capoeira and its philosophy. Come learn all about this fascinating and exciting practice with instructer Andre Lima of Capoeira Besouro Cape Cod. For more info and to register, please call Andre at 774-208-1874, or email: alimabrasil@hotmail.com

Fleet Movement Explorations

Sunday, August 28th, 2016 3:00 pm
Drop in dance workshop, by donation
Fleet Movement Explorations is a structured improvisational dance class. We start with warm-ups based in internal body awareness such as developmental movement patterns or somatic exploration, often integrated with thematic material. Embodiment is evoked through sensing movement articulation, initiation, and alignment in space-weight-time, and the three dimensions. Warm-up experiences are used as creative material for structuring dance scores. Each dancer becomes an artistic director of their score, danced by the whole group.  Weather permitting we hold class outside, working with the language immediacy of the Natural World. We play spontaneously with forces, shapes, feelings, images, and ideas rather than specific dance technique. The class is basically informal, challenging, and fun, and a good movement workout. At times we will have guest teachers. All are welcome. Inside The Pages: Mac Gatch & Tracey Lind

Wednesday, August 31st, 2016 7:30 pm
Free & Open To All
Mac Gatch, a summer resident of Wellfleet since the 1960s, has recently published a history of his family Till the Break of Day: Philip Gatch and Some Descendants Through Three Centuries - from about 1720 in Maryland to 1960 in Ohio.  His ancestors were among the first converts to Methodism, whose anti-slavery convictions brought them to move from Virginia to Milford, Ohio, in 1798. In Ohio they were farmers, participants in civic life, pillars of the Methodist church, and (increasingly) earned their living as businesspeople in Cincinnati. By 1960, the farms had been embraced by urban growth, and Mac had returned to the Episcopal Church, which his great-great-great grandfather had left for the more enthusiastic Methodism two centuries earlier. Mac (more formally Milton McC. Gatch), was Academic Dean and Provost at Union Theological Seminary in New York, and also served for many years a  priest-in-charge of the seasonal Chapel of St. James the Fisherman in Wellfleet. He will talk about his book with a longtime friend—now one of his successors at the chapel—Tracey Lind, who in her off-Cape life is dean of the Episcopal Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland.
