Fleet Movement Explorations

Sunday, April 23rd, 2017 3:00 pm
Drop-in dance workshop, by donation
Fleet Movement Explorations is a structured improvisational dance class. We start with warm-ups based in internal body awareness such as developmental movement patterns or somatic exploration, often integrated with thematic material. Embodiment is evoked through sensing movement articulation, initiation, and alignment in space-weight-time, and the three dimensions. Warm-up experiences are used as creative material for structuring dance scores. Each dancer becomes an artistic director of their score, danced by the whole group.  Weather permitting we hold class outside, working with the language immediacy of the Natural World. We play spontaneously with forces, shapes, feelings, images, and ideas rather than specific dance technique. The class is basically informal, challenging, and fun, and a good movement workout. At times we will have guest teachers. All are welcome. Lead by Becky Burrill, Ed.D.—dance-improvisationist, artistic director, developmental-creative arts educator, writer, visual artist, join weekly notifications concerning class thru Becky at 508 237 0217 • rburrill@verizon.net

Food And Climate Change

Thursday, April 27th, 2017 10:30 am
Open University of Wellfleet, taught by Judith Blau
5 Thursdays, 4/27 - 5/25, $60 - REGISTER HERE Taught by Judith Blau Sushi or Grasshopper? Thinking about Food and Climate Change.Although the agreement leading up to the 2015 Paris Climate Treaty was based on the understanding that it is imperative to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius maximum, and ideally 1.5 degrees, the growing consensus among scientists and world leaders now is that 2 degrees warming would have devastating consequences and we must collectively be committed to 1.5 degrees. Indeed, toward that end the aim now is to completely stop the use of fossil fuels by 2025. What is substituted for fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas)? The answer is: renewables, namely, biomass; wind; solar, geothermal; and hydropower. It is also virtually certain that we humans will devise creative solutions to the dire threats posed by the heating up of the planet. For example, subterranean homes may be the solution for people who live in areas that will be intolerably hot. Also, it will be too hot to grow fruit and vegetables in some equatorial countries and high-protein insects may serve as a basic food. Besides considering insects as a food choice we might also consider farm-raised shellfish, hydroponically-grown vegetables, and raising mushrooms indoors. In this class we will also find and discuss examples of new applications of renewable energy, such as solar roads. We will dream, propose, discover, and share in this participatory class. For the first 2 sessions, I will provide an orientation (based on my May 2017 book on climate change), and I think you will discover that the basics on climate change are quite straightforward. Please visit www.openuniversityofwellfleet.org for more info.
