The Future of American Fiction: Short Stories by 20 Writers Under 40

Monday, February 20th, 2012 12:00 pm
The book, “20 Under 40: Stories from The New Yorker”, will provide the springboard for lively discussion and critique as we discover these new storytellers and their unique styles.  According to The New Yorker, the writers selected for its “20 Under 40” short story collection in 2010 “represent the standards of inventiveness and vitality that characterize the best fiction being written in the country today.”  This 5 session seminar will be led by  Brown University Professor Rhoda Flaxman.  Participants will be encouraged to use several resources to analyze and gain an understanding of each story.  Discussion of the stories will be framed around what makes the story good, and which techniques are used to make the story effective and meaningful.  Because short stories are so concentrated, each one will evoke questions and ambiguities to challenge your interpretive skills and offer new insights into universal experiences.  We hope that you will leave this class not only with a greater appreciation of the short story as an art form, but also with an interest in reading more contemporary fiction. Call 508-349-1800 for more info and registration.
