A fire in 1976 destroyed a group of shops in the center of the main block and next door to the church.
In 1988 The US Post Office was relocated to a large new facility on Rte. 6, taking with it the daily visits of hundreds of residents.
Competition from large chains in near by towns caused the pharmacy and the news dealer to close leaving a void in the center of town.
