“THE wonder and beauty of the world is as infinite as its opposite”---Gould’s book of Fish
Each piece in this series is meant to evoke time as a “Divine Deluge” – a mighty, morality-free sweep of cosmic tenderness, cruelty, eros, humor, dread, beauty and radiating rhythm that has no choice but to swallow us along in its path.
I find certain archetypal icons deeply compelling, be they personal, ancient or contemporary, and many become the stuff of this wave. I draw what awes me and the drive and rhythm of the overall compositions are as deliberate and important as the minutiae that run through the images. Thank you for spending time with them. HOW THEY’RE DONE
Each piece is created on a board coated in white kaolin clay. I brush black India ink in places over the board’s surface then carve through the ink with a small knife blade to expose the white clay beneath. The lines are meant to give the illusion of drawing with light – to create something luminous.
Ellen LeBow has received the Pollock/Krasner Artist’sGrant and the Massachusetts Arts Council Grant for drawing. She is represented by the Rice/Polak Gallery in Provincetown where more of her work can be seen.
